Warm Porridge in Winter in Chengdu

The traditional Laba Festival is on the 8th day of the 12th lunar month. At that day, Chinese people usually cook Laba rice porridge, which some Buddhist temples also cook and give out to people.

This year Laba Festival is on Sunday, January 13, 2019. Speaking of Laba Festival, in addition to eating a bowl of Laba porridge, for most Chengdu people, the first thing coming into mind is the long queue at Wenshu Monastery where people wait for a bowl of free porridge.

Laba Porridge is made of various rice, beans and nuts such as yellow rice, white rice, dates, almonds, sunflower seeds and peanuts, thus it has a sweet taste and eating Laba porridge indicates a good beginning for the coming year. This year, Wenshu Monastery will offer free porridge from January 10 to 13. If you have time, remember to drop by and have your share of Laba porridge.

Lu You, a poet in Song Dynasty, wrote a poem named Eating Porridge, where he says, "In seeking to live a long and healthy life, there is no better way than eating porridge." This shows how much he loved porridge and also ancient Chinese thought eating porridge is important in winter for calorie and nutrition supplement.

Eight-treasure Porridge: Made of rice, beans, walnuts, red dates, longan, lotus seeds and other grains, good for energy generation and calming down our mind.

Millet and pumpkin porridge: The pumpkin is sweet and warm-natured, and cooked with millet, the porridge can warm the stomach.

Preserved egg and pork meat porridge: Pork contains protein, and cooked with preserved eggs and rough rice, the porridge is characterized with a smooth texture.
