Chengdu's International "Circle of Friends"

  In July 2019, Chengdu and the Italian city of Bologna jointly signed the Agreement on the Establishment of Friendly Cooperation Relations between the City of Chengdu and City of Bologna, and as such, Chengdu's international "circle of friends" expanded to a total of 100 cities, including 36 international twin cities and 64 international friendly cooperative relations cities. Between January and July 2019, Chengdu had made friends with eight new cities, including one international twin city and seven international friendly cooperative relations cities from Europe, the Americas, Oceania and Asia. City of Gold Coast, Australia

Since: May 20, 2019


  About the city: The City of Gold Coast is a coastal city along the Pacific Ocean in the Australian state of Queensland, well-known for its "gold coast" that stretches for 32km. Some of the city's pillar industries include tourism, service, education, culture and creativity, fishery, urban planning, consulting, motor racing, water sports and bio technology.


  Exchanges: In 2016, Chengdu and the City of Gold Coast signed a memorandum of understanding with regard to the establishment of friendly cooperative relations between the two cities. The two sides have already realized a number of feats in a multitude of fields like education and healthcare in forms such as design competition, higher education institution collaboration and jointly constructed laboratory. After establishing sister cities relations, the two sides will carry out further cooperation in areas like economy, trade, culture, tourism, education and sports.

 

 

International friendly cooperative relations cities

 

Athens, Greece

Since: January 21, 2019, local time


  About the city: Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens has a history of more than three millennia, and is currently the economic, financial, industrial, political and cultural heart of the country, as well as one of the centers of commerce of the European Union.


  Exchanges: For quite some time Chengdu and Greece have maintained close-knit economic, trade and cultural interactions, and between January and November 2018 alone the two sides recorded RMB130 million in trade with each other. In January 2019, Chengdu and Athens became international friendly cooperative relations cities, and the two sides will undertake cooperation in areas like culture, education, tourism, economy and trade through platforms established at an official level. A non-stop flight between Chengdu and Athens is projected to become available sometime in 2019.


Panama City, Panama

Since: March 25, 2019


  About the city: Panama City is the capital of Panama, and a port city located in Central America. The economy of Panama City revolves around commerce and services, in particular the likes of shipping, finance and tourism.


  Exchanges: China is Panama's second-largest trade partner in the world, as well as the biggest supplier of the Colón Free Trade Zone. Chengdu and Panama City will rely on international exchange conduits like "Chengdu Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fair" and "Chengdu International Sister Cities Scholarship" to carry out cooperation in realms like culture, trade and tourism.

 

Bogotá, Colombia

Since: March 28, 2019


  About the city: Bogotá is the capital and largest city of Colombia, famed as the "Athens of South America". Local economy centers on industries, in particular fields like automobile assembly, textile, chemicals and cement.


  Exchanges: Chengdu previously held economic and trade exchange, cooperation and matchmaking activity in Bogotá in 2017, with participants including Chengdu enterprises from 21 areas such as science and technology, information technology, culture and creativity, medical care and food and catering, which culminated in the confirmation of a slew of cooperation intentions. After establishing friendly cooperative relations, Chengdu and Bogotá will work together in domains like economy and trade, tourism, science and technology, culture and sports, as well as the trading of coffee between the two cities.

 

 

San José, Costa Rica

Since: June 8, 2019


  About the city: San José, the capital of Costa Rica, is also the country's most populous city, as well as one of its famous tourist destinations well-known for local attractions like the Poás Volcano and Cartago City.


  Exchanges: In 2017, Sichuan Province sent a delegation to countries including Costa Rica to host promotion to introduce Sichuan's business environment. In addition, San José has also hosted Sichuan Culinary Culture Week, Cultural China – Splendid Sichuan and numerous other Sichuan-themed activities. In July 2018, the Ambassador of Costa Rica to China visited Chengdu and exchanged opinions about strengthening cooperation in fields like sports, culture and tourism.

 

Colombo, Sri Lanka

Since: June 13, 2019


  About the city: Colombo is the largest city and commercial nexus of Sri Lanka. Due to its prime geographic location and status as a famous port, it is also known as the "cross-road of the Orient". Main industries of Colombo include port and services, while other top industries are textile, tobacco and metal, among others.


  Exchanges: Interactions between Chengdu and Sri Lanka have been frequent. In recent years, Chengdu and Sri Lanka have gradually hosted events like production capacity cooperation dialogue, economy and trade symposium and exchange meeting, and the two sides have collaborated in fields like economy, trade and medical care. A non-stop flight between Chengdu and Colombo was launched in February 2015. After establishing friendly cooperative relations, the two cities will fortify cooperation in areas like economy, trade, education and tourism, in addition to undertake other types of international exchange activities.

 

Austin, the United States

Since: July 15, 2019


  About the city: Austin is the capital and education center of the American state of Texas. The economy of Austin is famed for its semiconductor and computer industries, thus is also dubbed a "Silicon Valley," while its biomedicine, incubator, education and other industries are also quite developed.


  Exchanges: Rapport between Chengdu and Austin has been strong, as the two sides have collaborated in areas such as arts, cultural education and urban development. In March 2019, Chengdu sent a delegation comprised of 15 enterprises to head to Austin to partake in South by Southwest, while representatives from Austin participated in and delivered an address at the 2019 Chengdu International Friendship City Mayors Innovation Forum in June 2019. After establishing friendly cooperative relations, the pair will seek wider and deeper cooperation and exchanges in innovation and entrepreneurship.

 

Bologna, Italy


Since: July 15, 2019


  About the city: Bologna is one of the oldest cities in Italy and is well-known for its plethora of historical ruins and profound cultural heritage. The city's main industries are food, textile, agricultural machinery, automobile, railway equipment and chemicals, and it also functions as an agricultural produce distribution center and commercial center because of its status as a railway hub.


  Exchanges: Frequent interactions have been made between Chengdu and Bologna in culture, economy and trade. In 2017, the 50-years old Bologna Illustrators' Exhibition was held in Chengdu. In April 2019, the Music Cities Convention took place in Chengdu, and the two cities carried out a raft of cooperation in domains like music and city construction, and musical project exchange. After forging their friendly cooperative cities relations, Chengdu and Bologna will deepen communications and collaborations in areas such as culture, creativity and music.
