On December 14, 2017, it was officially announced that over five million passengers had been recorded at Chengdu’s aviation port of entry for the year. According to Du Jinyou, director of the Chengdu Municipal Port and Logistics Office, when operation began in 1984, the port of entry only recorded 20,000 passengers in one year. After more than 26 years of hard work, in 2010 the number surpassed the one million for the first time. As Chengdu's international flight network continues to grow, in 2013, 2014 and 2015 the entry and exit records respectively exceeded two million, three million and four million. The five million mark was passed in 2017, a powerful testament to Chengdu’s prolific efforts to establish itself as an international aviation hub and cosmopolitan city.
